Wilpattu takes its name from them: villus are natural, sand-rimmed basins that fill with rainwater and sit scattered through the forest. There are more than fifty in the park. They are what makes a Wilpattu safari different — instead of scanning open plains, you work from villu to villu, because that is where the animals come to drink.
The dry season, roughly February to October, is the better window: water concentrates at the villus and the tracks stay passable. February to June is the standout for sloth bears, when the palu trees fruit and the bears climb them to feed. The north-east monsoon brings heavy rain around December and January.
Yala has the higher leopard density and the open terrain that makes them easier to spot; it also has the crowds. Wilpattu is far larger, far quieter and densely forested, so sightings take more patience — and when they come, you are usually alone with them. If it is your only safari and you want the surest leopard, take Yala. If you have seen Yala, or you value wilderness over odds, take Wilpattu.
