Kumana’s reputation rests on its nesting season, roughly May to July, when thousands of waterbirds breed in the mangroves of the Kumana Villu — painted storks, pelicans, spoonbills, herons and egrets packed together in the trees. Birdlife is excellent across the dry season from April to September. Mammals are easier on the cooler dawn and late-afternoon drives year-round.
Kumana was once called Yala East, and it shares a boundary with Yala, so much of the same wildlife moves between them. The difference is pressure: Yala’s Block 1 can see a hundred jeeps at a good sighting; Kumana rarely sees a fraction of that. You trade a slightly lower leopard density for a far calmer, wilder-feeling drive — and much better birding.
The park entrance is at Okanda, reached along the coast road south from Arugam Bay through Panama — around an hour and a half. Free door-to-door hotel pickup is included from Arugam Bay, Pottuvil, Panama and Okanda. It pairs naturally with a surf trip: safari at dawn, back in the water by afternoon.

Yes. Kumana shares a boundary with Yala — it was formerly called Yala East — and leopards move freely between them. Density is lower than Yala Block 1, but there are also far fewer jeeps, so a sighting is usually calm and unhurried rather than a scrum. Sightings are wild and never guaranteed.
