The coral sanctuary
Straight off the beach
A protected marine area beginning metres from shore, shallow enough to snorkel and reachable without a boat. The coral has taken a battering from bleaching and decades of visitors, so it isn't pristine — but it's alive, and it's remarkably accessible. Don't stand on it, and skip any boat that offers to feed the fish.

Most mornings
Green turtles come in to graze right off the main beach and are often visible from waist-deep water. They're wild animals, not an attraction: don't touch them, don't ride them, and be wary of anyone selling seaweed to lure them closer.
Diving the wrecks

Several wrecks lie within a short boat ride, including a well-known steamer, and the dive shops along the strip run trips and courses through the calm season. Visibility collapses during the monsoon, so this is firmly a dry-season activity.

A long stretch of sand with the main road and its bars, restaurants and shops running right behind it. Busier, louder and more built-up than anywhere further east — the appeal and the drawback are the same thing.
The 2004 tsunami memorial

At Peraliya, just down the coast, a memorial and small museum mark the train disaster of December 2004, in which thousands of people were killed. It is a sombre place and a significant one locally. Visit quietly if you go.
Surf the point
Nov–Apr
A reef break off the northern end that works through the dry season and suits confident intermediates. Beginners are far better served at Weligama, an hour and a half east.

The most accessible beach town on the coast, and the quickest to reach from the airport.

Straight down the E01 expressway. Closer than anywhere else on the south coast, which is why so many trips begin or end here.

Leaving Hikkaduwa — and being honest about the distance
This is the furthest point on our coastal run from Yala: 181 km, and the better part of four hours each way. A day trip means a very early start and a long day in a vehicle. If a safari matters to you, it's usually better to do it on the way somewhere.

Doable, but a genuinely long day — pickup in the small hours and back after dark. Guests staying further east get the same game drive with far less driving.

Timing
When to come
More than anywhere else on this coast, Hikkaduwa's season is about water clarity — the reef and the wrecks are the point.
November – April
The season. Calm, clear water for snorkelling and diving, reliable sun and the reef at its most visible. Also the busiest and priciest stretch.
May – September
Southwest monsoon, and it hits here hardest. Rough seas, poor visibility, most dive operations paused. Cheap and quiet, but the main reasons to come are unavailable.
October
Transitional. The sea starts to settle late in the month and operators begin reopening.

We do collect from Hikkaduwa, but we'll always tell you the truth about it: at 181 km you'll spend the better part of seven hours in a vehicle for a three-hour game drive. If you're moving on to Ella or the deep south afterwards, doing the safari as part of that journey is the better trip.

About 181 km, or three hours forty each way — the longest run from any beach town we collect from. A day trip means leaving in the small hours and getting back after dark. If you're heading east or inland afterwards, folding the safari into that journey makes far more sense.
Yes. Green turtles feed in the shallows off the main beach and are often visible from waist-deep water, no boat required. They're wild — don't touch or ride them, and avoid anyone selling seaweed to draw them in, which is bad for the animals.
Partly. The sanctuary has suffered from bleaching events and decades of heavy visitor traffic, so it isn't pristine reef. What makes it worth doing is the access — living coral and reef fish a short swim from the sand, which is rare anywhere.
November to April. Visibility is good and the sea is calm enough for the wreck sites. During the southwest monsoon from May onwards, visibility collapses and most operators stop running.
It's the best-placed beach town for the airport at about two hours, which makes it a sensible first or last stop. As a base for exploring the south and the parks it's the weakest of the coastal towns — everything worth reaching is further east.
