Hiriketiya, a horseshoe bay that outgrew its lane
A single small cove that went from fishing beach to the most talked-about spot on the south coast in about a decade. Beginner waves on the inside, a reef break on the outside, and a lane of coffee shops connecting the two.

The things worth your time in Hiriketiya
There isn't a long list, and that's rather the point. Most days here are a surf, a long breakfast and a walk to somewhere nearby.
Surf the bay
All levels
The inside of the horseshoe is sandy, gentle and about as forgiving a place to learn as exists, with boards and lessons available right on the sand. The left off the point is a proper reef break and gets territorial when it's working — watch it for a while before paddling out.
Swim the inside corner

The bay's shape shelters it from most of the swell, so unlike much of the south coast there's usually somewhere calm enough to actually swim. It's small, though, and it gets busy with surf schools by mid-morning.
Hummanaya blowhole

The sea cave near Dickwella that spouts hard when the swell is up and does very little when it isn't. Check the sea state before making the trip.
Dickwella & Talalla
10–20 min
Dickwella has the practical things — a proper town, a bank, a fish market. Talalla, a little further, is a long quiet arc of sand with barely anything on it, and the better beach for a walk.

Most days
Several studios run drop-in classes, and a run of cafés along the lane take breakfast unusually seriously for a village this size. This is what most people's mornings actually look like here.
Getting to Hiriketiya
It sits just off the coast road at Dickwella, and the last part of the approach is a narrow lane.

Timing
When to come
The bay works best on the same calendar as the rest of the south coast.
November – April
The season. Cleanest surf, calmest inside corner and the most reliable weather. Also when the bay is fullest — the lane can feel small in February.
May – September
Southwest monsoon. Bigger, messier conditions and regular rain, though the bay's shape shelters it better than open beaches nearby. Much quieter and much cheaper.
October
Shoulder, and a gamble. Emptying out or filling up depending on the week, with conditions to match.

Hiriketiya questions, answered
Yes — the inside of the bay is sandy-bottomed, sheltered and one of the gentler places to learn on the south coast, with schools and board hire on the sand. The reef break off the point is a different proposition and not a beginner wave.
About 99 km, roughly two hours by road. Close enough for a day trip: we collect before dawn, you take a morning game drive and you're back at the bay by early afternoon.
Usually. The lane into the bay is narrow and a few places sit up tracks a van can't safely take, in which case we'll agree a pickup point a short walk away and confirm it the evening before. Give us your guesthouse name when you book.
Hiriketiya is smaller, surfier and more social — one bay, one lane, and you'll keep seeing the same people. Tangalle has far more beach, more space and more choice of hotel, and it's closer to Yala. They're 25 minutes apart, so it's easy to stay in one and visit the other.
Longer than you'd think. It's a place people intend to stay two nights and end up staying five, because the days are structured around surf and not much else. Three to five is typical.
