Before you book
Why your pickup is at 02:30
It's the question we're asked most, so here's exactly how the morning works.
Yala National Parkβs gates open at first light, and that is when the park is at its best β wildlife moves at dawn and settles once the heat builds. Getting you there for the gate means starting in the dark.
These are shared tours, so we run a staggered collection: vehicles work across town picking up one hotel at a time, and everyone converges at our office in Debarawewa, Tissamaharama at the same moment. From there you transfer into the safari jeeps and head for the gate together.
Thatβs why we quote a window rather than a single time. Where you fall inside it depends on the dayβs bookings and where your hotel sits on the run β we confirm your exact time the evening before, so you are never guessing.

Tikiri was the best guide, we got to see so much wildlife and we even saw a leopard. It was such an amazing experience and a must visit if coming to do Yala national park.
Thanks to Tikiri, we were lucky enough to see leopards, elephants, buffalo and crocodiles! It was incredible, thank you so much.
We travelled with Yasha β pickup and drop-off worked wonderfully. A great experience overall, though a little costly once you add the booking fee and the park entrance. I would still recommend it.
Pickup went perfectly. The safari was very interesting and we saw a great variety of animals. The onward drive was very relaxed and our driver was excellent β careful and considerate the whole way.
Everything went brilliantly. We were collected punctually at the pickup point we gave and started the safari at 2pm, with an hour beforehand for lunch at a local place our driver recommended. What we loved was the variety of animals and the jeep driver Mutu's spotting β he kept watch and stayed in touch with the other drivers.

Route FAQs
Around 12 hours door to door with the game drive in the middle. The road leg alone is roughly seven hours, so folding the safari into it costs you very little extra time and saves a whole separate day.
Anywhere along it β Bundala, Hambantota, Ambalantota, Kalametiya, Ranna, Kahandamodara, Rekawa, Goyambokka, Tangalle, Marakolliya, Nilwella, Silent Beach and everywhere between, right up to Galle and Hikkaduwa. Tell us the hotel when you book and we take you to the door wherever the lanes allow.
Yes, boards included β most people on this route are moving between surf spots. Tell us how many and what length when you book and we will send a vehicle that fits them properly.
02:30 for the dawn game drive, which is the best window for leopards. If a start that early does not appeal, take the 10:00 departure and do an afternoon drive instead, arriving on the south coast in the evening.
No. Yala entrance is about $43 per adult and $22 per child, set by the Department of Wildlife rather than by us. You can pre-pay at checkout or pay in cash at the gate. Everything else β the jeep, the tracker-guide, all road transport and both hotel transfers β is in the price.
Almost always, and it is one booking instead of two. A private transfer along that road plus a separate half-day safari with its own jeep and driver comes to considerably more than this, and you would still lose the day.
Our safari jeeps have rain covers, so a passing shower is no problem β Yala is often at its most active just after rain. If the weather turns too severe to safari safely, we'll reschedule your tour or give you a full refund.
Sunscreen, a cap and sunglasses, comfortable shoes and a refillable water bottle. If you're a Sri Lankan resident or from a SAARC country, bring your ID or passport for the reduced park rate. And if you haven't pre-paid your park tickets at checkout, bring cash for the entrance fee at the gate.
Yes β children of all ages are welcome. Under-2s ride free and under-12s travel with an adult. Let us know their ages when you book and we'll make sure the vehicle suits.
