All of Ella in one day, from your beach hotel

Honestly, it depends on your time. Ella is two and a half to five hours from the coast depending on your hotel, so this is a 14-hour day with a lot of it in the vehicle. If you have a spare night, staying over in Ella is the nicer way to do it. But if your itinerary is full and this is your only window for the hill country, you'll see the waterfalls, the train ride, Nine Arch Bridge, Little Adam's Peak and a tea factory, and sleep in your own bed. Roughly two and a half to three hours from Tangalle, three to three and a half from Matara, three and a half to four from Mirissa and Weligama, and four and a half from Galle or Hikkaduwa. That's each way, via Wellawaya, and traffic through Matara decides a lot of it. The further west you're staying, the earlier we collect you.

No — that's a separate, six to seven hour journey down the whole hill-country line. What this tour includes is the final and most photographed section, Demodara to Ella, which is the stretch that crosses Nine Arch Bridge. It's a short ride rather than a long one, and it's the part people picture when they picture that train.

You cross it on one, which is better. There's also time at the bridge itself for photographs. Whether a second train happens to pass while you're standing underneath depends on the timetable that day, and the timetable in Sri Lanka moves — so we won't promise it.

Easy by hiking standards: about 45 minutes on a well-made path through tea, with steps near the top. Most reasonably mobile guests manage it comfortably, and there's no need for a guide or a permit. If you'd rather not, the tea shops at the bottom are a pleasant place to wait.

The Flying Ravana zipline is about $35, the Uva Halpewatte tea factory tour about $10, the Calypso music carriage about $6 and the Dowa temple entrance about $5, plus a few dollars of tuk-tuk fees at the stops vehicles can't reach. You choose on the day, and you pay at each place rather than to us.

Yes — children of all ages are welcome, and under-2s travel free. Bear in mind it's a long day in a vehicle with an early start, so it suits older children better than toddlers. Little Adam's Peak is manageable for most kids who are used to walking.

The tour runs. Ella in the wet is green and dramatic and the waterfalls are at their best, though mist can sit in the gap and take the long views away. If the weather is severe enough to make the roads or the hike unsafe we'll talk to you about moving the date, and you can cancel free up to 24 hours before in any case.
