Every jeep at Yala needs a park permit, and almost every jeep queues for one in the dark at 4.30am β€” the hour the leopards are moving. We buy yours the day before. Your ticket is in the vehicle when it collects you, so you drive straight to the entrance and start looking while the queue is still forming. From $73 per person, park entrance ticket included and nothing to pay at the gate.

How the skip-the-line works

Somebody stands in that queue. It just isn't you.

There is no secret entrance and no special lane β€” the trick is simply that the ticket is bought before the morning starts. Here is exactly what happens.

  1. 1The day before, we queueA member of our team goes to the Yala ticket office the day before your safari and stands in the line to buy your permits. You are asleep for this part.
  2. 2Your permit rides with youYour entry ticket is already paid for and in the jeep when it collects you β€” worth about $43 per adult at the gate, and it is in the price you paid online.
  3. 3Straight through the gateAt 4.30am your jeep drives past the ticket queue to the entrance. You are on a track and looking for leopards while other vehicles are still waiting to pay.

Amazing experience, our guide was on time, good communication, great safari vehicle, fast track queue was well worth it as we zoomed past alot of others at 5.45 am. Our guide made sure we saw lots of animals, mongoose, buffalo, crocodiles, monkeys, elephants and a very shy leopard, lots of lovely birds. We did the half day, would definitely recommend

Booking the tour with the ticket included paid off. We were able to drive past the line of jeeps and had only a very short wait at the entrance to the national park. The guide provided us with some information about the animals. We found it a bit concerning that there are a lot of jeeps in the national park. When rare animals are spotted, it's almost a race to get a spot to watch them. We think this is the case throughout the national park, no matter which tour. 7 hours was the right choice. You are in the park early in the morning and are finished around noon.

We had an unforgettable experience with our guide and driver tikiri. His adventurous spirit and excitement for the animals was fantastic! We saw peacocks, monkeys, elephants, crocodiles, sloth bears and so much more. Don't miss this experience when visiting beautiful Yala. Pick up to drop off was so seamless, tikiri even shared a delicious breakfast of local flavors. We will be back!

Massive long line for entering to park but We are like VIP's. No wait directly to the gate for entering. Saw the bear, leopard (twice), elephants, lots of water buffaloes, lots of crocodiles, lots of peacocks, eagles, moose and many more birds. Our safari driver was truly experienced. At one point, he was driving in reverse and fast just to catch the sight of leopard. Highly recommended this operator.

It was perfect. We saw a lot of animals, had a great group, driver was in time and always tried that we see different kind of animals. The only thing I would like to mention for others doing the day trip, between 12-14 aka noon-2pm the park is closed and you'll be at a restaurant on the parkside and have to take a break for 2 hours since the park is closed. We did not know that but would have taken a book or game with us if we would have known that before.

A wonderful safari experience and one of the highlights of our Sri Lanka trip. We saw many elephants a leopard in their natural habitat, along with buffaloes, birds, and other wildlife. The park is well maintained, the scenery is beautiful, and the safari was both exciting and peaceful.

We had an absolutely amazing time on this safari! The entire experience was perfectly organized from start to finish. A huge thank you to our driver, Mutu, who was absolutely lovely, professional, and knowledgeable. We booked skip the line package that was worth buying it. Our over all experience was good we were lucky to spot leopards. Our tickets included breakfast which was very disappointing. In my opinion that safari should end in maximum 2 or 3 hours otherwise you start getting bored and tired

The enjoyment of a safari tour largely depends on the driver's skill, and thanks to their flexible approach this time, we were able to encounter a variety of animals. In particular, seeing a leopard, which I had given up on seeing, will be a memory I will cherish forever.

We had the most wonderful day safari with the fantastic Ishan as our guide. He was brilliant at finding all the wildlife the park has to offer - including leopards, elephants, crocodiles, buffalos, owls, eagles, toucans and so many other animals. The breakfast and lunch provided were delicious too. We can't recommend this trip enough and if you're lucky enough to have Ishan as your guide, you're in the best hands possible.

The safari was great, lucky enough to see a leopard among other things, our guide Bale, was really strategic in making that happen for us. The skipping the line for the Yala entry ticket was a really good move and highly recommend that to other travellers. Just meant that the guides could pick us up a little later, and there was no exchange of money on the day. Guides are great at spotting things, but I recommend you letting them know if you see something also, they will stop and make sure you see what you want to see.

It was an unforgettable experience. Our driver Dilan was very experienced and always on the right place for us to spot all kinds of animals - as well as explaining us a lot about them. The park is big and offers a lot nice views all around. We can recommend the 7 hours tour starting from the morning, to get a high chance of spotting the leopards.

We bought a last-minute trip through GetYourGuide and we are very happy. Dilan was a very good guide, thanks to him we saw many beautiful animals. He told us some interesting facts, but above all he was focused on driving and looking for animals. Most of the time we drove alone, without other cars, and could admire the beautiful views and wildlife. The only madness was when we were looking for leopards. Then it was really crowded with jeeps, but we expected that, after all, "There is no safari without leo." However, everyone hopes to see a leopard, so I understand that and I was very happy when we were able to observe one. Dilan treated us to a delicious homemade breakfast. Thank you very much once again.

We had the best afternoon on Safari with Sasanka. We were travelling for our honeymoon and we were lucky enough to see all of the different types of animals. Sasanka was knowledgable, funny and knew exactly where to find the animals we wanted to see, which made the safari extra special!

The service was first class, whether car, food or pick-up. The guide always managed to point out lots of animals - especially elephants - and birds. So it was a fantastic day. However, it felt like there were hundreds of jeeps on the tour. There was a huge crowd, especially when leopards were spotted. There was not always fair behavior among the drivers. If you can, you should avoid booking the tour at the weekend.

Before you book

Skip the line Yala safari questions

It means one of our team has already stood in the queue for you. Yala's ticket office opens before dawn and every jeep without a pre-bought permit has to queue there before it can enter the park β€” on a busy morning that is a long wait at the exact hour the wildlife is most active. We buy your permits the day before, so your jeep drives straight to the entrance instead. As one guest put it, they β€œzoomed past a lot of others at 5.45am”.

Yes, in full. The Department of Wildlife entrance ticket β€” about $43 per adult and $22 per child if you were buying it yourself β€” is already bought and included in the price you see on this page. There is no add-on to tick and no ticket option at checkout, because there is nothing left to buy.

No. Nothing at the gate, nothing to the driver, no local cash needed for entry. The price on this page covers the park ticket, the jeep, the tracker-guide, hotel pickup and drop-off, your meals, water, binoculars and all taxes. Tips are yours to decide on and never expected.

The 7-hour morning safari is $73 per person and the full-day safari is $114 per person, both from two people sharing and both with the park entrance ticket already included. A solo traveller pays the two-person rate, because the jeep, the driver and the permit queue cost the same whether one person or two is in the vehicle.

Everything is handled before the day starts. The park entry permit is bought in advance and included, so there is no ticket office queue at 4.30am and nothing to pay at the gate β€” no cash, no local currency, no waiting while the light you came for goes to waste. Breakfast is included, and on the full day a rice and curry lunch as well. You are booked, paid and on a track while the rest of the gate is still forming a line.

Any time up to the night before. The one thing we cannot do is a same-day booking: a member of our team has to be at the ticket office the evening before to buy your permit, so booking on the morning itself is too late for this tour. Book by the night before and you are fine. If you are trying to arrange something sooner, message us on WhatsApp and we will tell you honestly whether we can still do it.

The 7-hour tour runs 4.30am to 11.30am β€” the dawn drive, which is the single best window of the day for leopards β€” with breakfast in the park and up to 7 guests in the jeep. The full day adds the late-afternoon drive, when the park cools and the animals move again, and carries a maximum of 6 guests so there is more room over twelve hours. Breakfast and a rice and curry lunch are included on the full day.

Yala closes to vehicles between roughly noon and 2pm. It is the Department of Wildlife's rule, not ours, and it applies to every operator. On the full-day tour you spend that window at a parkside restaurant over lunch β€” several guests have told us they wished they had brought a book or a pack of cards, so we are telling you now. The 7-hour tour finishes before the closure and does not run into it at all.

Hotel pickup and drop-off is included from Tissamaharama and Weerawila, along with Debarawewa, Kirinda and Kataragama nearby. Your driver confirms the exact collection time the evening before. Staying further afield β€” Ella, the south coast, Arugam Bay? Our safari + transfer routes travel between towns with a game drive on the way.

No one can promise that, and you should be wary of anyone who does. Yala holds the highest density of leopards anywhere in the world and an early, unhurried start on the quieter tracks is the best hand you can play β€” which is exactly what skipping the queue buys you. But these are wild animals on their own schedule. What we can promise is the time in the park, and a tracker who knows where to spend it.

Up to 7 guests on the 7-hour tour and a maximum of 6 on the full day. Everyone in your party travels together in one vehicle. Prices on this page are per person based on two sharing.

Yes, and children aged 3 to 11 travel at a reduced rate because their park ticket costs less than an adult's. Infants under 3 are free. The jeep is open-sided with bench seating, so a toddler will need a lap on the rougher tracks. The tour is not suitable for pregnant women, guests with back problems or wheelchair users β€” the tracks are genuinely rough.

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before your safari, for a full refund β€” including the park permit we bought on your behalf. You can also reserve now and pay later if you would rather keep your plans flexible.
